Parenting is the most exhilarating and equally overwhelming journey.

There's so much to think about and take in that it's easy to feel like you're drowning in all the new information.

Diapers can be one such headache; which brand is best, what size will stop leakages and explosions?

We’re here to help solve that conundrum at least, with top tips on making sure your baby’s diaper fits properly.

Trial and error

Pampers diaper sizes go by your baby’s weight - not age or gender - as weight is the most accurate way to determine the correct fit.

Where sizes overlap, it may take some trial and error to get the right fit.

Most of the time, your baby's weight will fall perfectly within the range of a certain diaper size.

But in some cases, you might need to choose between two sizes, as the weight ranges can overlap.

If the diaper is too small, it can cause irritation and diaper rash. If it's too big, it will leak.

Babies come in all sizes and shapes, so diapers fit a little differently on every child.

Diaper fit top tips

Here are five tips to keep in mind when choosing the right diaper for your baby.

  1. Size guide: This may seem super obvious, but you need to read the packet carefully. If your child is approaching the upper limit of the diaper's weight range, it may be time to consider a switch. But remember - the weight limits are based on average-sized babies, so it’s not a one-size-fits-all approach.
  2. Skin marks: Red marks on a baby's skin may mean the diaper is too tight, or your baby is suffering from diaper rash.
  3. Leaks: Occasional diaper leaks are normal, but if the diaper is leaking regularly, double check the fit. The leg cuffs should wrap neatly around your baby's legs and bottom. After putting on the diaper, run your fingers around these edges to make sure the cuffs are pulled out. Cuffs being tucked inside are a common cause of leakage.
  4. Check the waist: A diaper should close easily without having to pull hard on the tabs. Tabs should be fastened straight across and be at the same rise in both front and back. It's important the diaper is not too tight, especially at night. You should be able to fit two fingers under the waistband when the diaper is fastened.
  5. Rise: The rise of the diaper should be around baby's belly button, so if the diaper's rise appears low, it's time to size up.
