Teenagers whose parents smoke are 55% more likely to vape, according to new research.

In a large study of Irish teenagers, the researchers also found that the proportion who have tried e-cigarettes has been increasing dramatically.

And although boys are more likely to use e-cigarettes, the rate of use among girls in increasing more rapidly.

The data

The team examined data on more than 6,000 17-18-year-olds.

The study showed that teenagers whose parents smoked were around 55% more likely to have tried e-cigarettes, and some 51% more likely to have tried smoking.

The proportion who had tried e-cigarettes had increased from 23% in 2014 to 39% in 2019.

The findings were presented at the European Respiratory Society International Congress in Barcelona, Spain.
