We've all been there; pacing the floors all night with a child who just won't go to sleep and the spectre of work in a few hours looming large.

Then comes sunrise and it's time to get in the shower, put on your best face and get to work.

It's not easy being a mom and doing it all, especially on days when you're functioning on little to no sleep.

So, here are some tips to help you function at work after a sleepless night.

How to function at work after a sleepless night

  1. Reset expectations: You're not superwoman and no one expects you to be. Sometimes just getting through the day is enough.
  2. Focus on the urgent list: On days when you're sleep deprived and struggling, focus on the must-do's and leave what can wait for another day. Make sure you delegate where you can, and don't be afraid to ask for help.
  3. Don't make any huge decisions: The day after a night of no sleep really isn't an ideal day to make world-changing decisions. If something very urgent and important is due, seek counsel from co-workers or manage up if possible. People will understand, and being a parent isn't a weakness.
  4. Take time out: Does your office have a quiet room where you can decompress or even nap? Or maybe just grab 40 winks in your car if possible. You'd be surprised what a quick power nap can do for your head.
  5. Don't overdose on caffeine: Caffeine will definitely help wake you up, but go easy on the intake. You might end up keeping yourself awake all night again!
  6. Take a parent's day: If you can, and if it's necessary, take a parent's day or take an annual leave day. Sometimes it's just not possible to power through.
  7. Work from home: If your work is office-based and it's possible to work remotely in extenuating circumstances, ask for a WFH day. Yes, you're still working but it takes some of the pressure off and at least you can get a proper sleep in your own bed at lunchtime.
